Prominent Coverage

How can my girlfriend and I have the same exact cell phone company but when we are together I usually have a hard time making phone calls and she can get through right away? It seems like her phone always shows a lot of bars with a strong signal whereas my coverage is less then exceptional. What is the difference? Could her newer phone be taking over the higher signal from me? It may sound like a silly question but it is the only thing that I can think of because when she is not around I get calls through without a problem.
