British Visual Arts in the 1990s
June 5th, 2011
The advertising tycoon and art collector, Charles Saatchi, is arguably the chief taste-maker of visual arts in Britain. In the Nineties, it was Charles Saatchi who championed the sensational Britart explosion via his Saatchi Gallery. His selected Young British Artists (also known as YBAs) such as Tracey Emin and Hirst made Britain the world centre for modern art controversy. Hirst, known for his works such as his formaldehyde-pickled shark, is now reportedly Britain’s richest living artist. It was Tracey Emin’s “My Bed” – a real, rumpled and stained bed – that catapulted her career as an artist. This particular piece of art was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1999.
